Please join us in welcoming Darcy Dietrich who accepted the fixed-term Early Childhood EAL Assistant Teacher position. Darcy will join us on January 7, 2019, to support the learning of EAL students in the Early Childhood and will be with us until the end of this academic year. Darcy is from Phoenix, Arizona, but has lived in Budapest for the past 5 years. She has 4 years experience teaching EAL at the International School of Budapest. She loves traveling to exotic places, singing Karaoke, and baking, and is really looking forward to working with all of the students and staff at AISB.
We are fortunate to have Ida Karászy supporting the Early Childhood team for the three weeks until Darcy can join us. Please welcome her.

If you are aware of any students who may be leaving in December, please let Erika know as soon as possible, so that we can alert Admissions who will confirm with the parents.
The second round of At Risk Notifications are due December 4th. These are formal, written notifications shared with the parents of students who are unable to meet grade level expectations due to academic, social and/or attendance concerns. These reports are only written for students who are not identified as receiving Learning Support Services, but are being considered for Tier 2 targeted intervention plans. If you are considering moving a student to Tier 2, then you need to complete an At Risk Notification. Additionally, the concern must not be related to English language development. At Risk Notifications may be written up to three times during the year if necessary.
An ‘At Risk Notification’ must to be completed for all subjects (core or encore) where students are assessed as emerging. If you are unsure whether or not to complete an ‘At Risk Notification’, please talk to one of the members of the Student Support Team (SST) (Shawn, Pablo, or Jen). ‘At Risk Notifications' must be completed and shared with Krista to review no later than this Tuesday, December 4th, and shared with parents in a face to face meeting before Friday, December 14th. The ‘At Risk Notification’ form can be located in the sidebar of the Mindset => AISB Forms => At Risk Notification Link.

Important Reminders:
- Please ensure you always share your substitute plans with Erika.
- Please include all transition pick ups and drop offs (e.g. following recess) in you plans.
- Please add the Bus and ASA list to your plan so substitutes know who needs to get on which bus and which ASA to attend.
- Assistant Teachers must also provide a schedule plan to Erika that includes their schedule, transitions, duties, and any other important information their substitute requires.
To alleviate confusion for colleagues and families who seek to contact us when we are absent from work, we are including the following step in the substitute planning process. If professional learning, sickness, or family circumstances or other personal reasons require you to be away from work for more than one day, you are requested to create an automatic “out of office” reply for your work email.
The Automatic reply needs to be one of the following statements:
- Absences of 2-4 days
"I am currently away. I plan to be back at work on [Insert date]. I will respond to your email upon my return. In the event of an emergency, please contact the Elementary Office (+36 26556020 / +36 26556067)." - Absences of 5 or more days
"I am currently away. I plan to be back at work on [Insert date]. For general questions or changes to your child’s schedule please contact [Insert name, title, and email contact]*. I will respond to your email upon my return. In the event of an emergency, please contact the Elementary Office (+36 26556020 / +36 26556067)."
*Please ensure these individuals are aware you have tagged them. Core teachers please insert your AT's name, title (assistant teacher) and contact. Encore teachers please insert the name, title, and email of another encore teacher. Once updated, please remove the quotes.

The PSA sponsored Holiday Market (formerly known as Winter Wonderland) is Friday, December 7. Set up begins the evening of Thursday, December 6. To support the event our PE and Drama Departments have been extremely flexible with their classroom space. We are very grateful for their support. All schedule changes are listed below.
The Holiday Market opens at 12:00 pm. Elementary students who visit the event after 3:30 pm must be accompanied by a parent. Please do not release students after school on Friday, December 7th, unless they have been picked up by a parent. Please escort them to the buses or to their after school activity if they are not picked up.
PE schedule and location changes:
Multiage and Kindergarten PE lessons scheduled on December 7th will take place at the regular time in the Elementary Drama room. All other PE lessons (grades 1-5) scheduled on December 7 will take place in the Auxi gym or Building B gym. ATs or teachers are asked to accompany their children to the Building B gym.
- 9:35 - 10:15 - Building B Gym (gym #1 & #2)
- 11:05 - 11:45 - 1/2 of the Building B Gym (gym #1)
- 11:50 - 12:30 - Building B Gym (gym #1 & #2) *MS or HS kids will be outside or in the Auxi Gym
- 1:20 - 2:00 - Auxi Gym (3F is the only ES class at this time)
- 2:05 - 2:45 - 1/2 of the Building B Gym (gym #1) and the Auxi gym
Again, we thank you all for your support and flexibility. The rearrangement of the schedule took a lot of planning time and effort from many people. All possibilities were exhausted, and this is the best solution with the least possible impact on student learning.

In the ES we now have 4 mobile induction cookers that can be used to heat compatible pots and pans. Induction cookers are ideal in a school setting as they are easier to control than conduction, and safer than gas. Pots come up to temperature faster, the surfaces are easy to clean, and they use less energy than their conductive counterparts!
Induction cooking uses electric currents to directly heat pots and pans through magnetic induction. Instead of using thermal conduction (a gas or electric element transferring heat from a burner to a pot or pan), induction heats the cooking vessel itself almost instantly.
Cooking as an element of a learning journey not only introduces students to an important and valuable life skill, but also provides opportunities for them to put STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths) concepts into practice. Through cooking students can begin to understand a variety of math and science concepts, such as the properties of matter and the role of temperature, emulsions, chemical reactions, measurements and volume. Cooking can help students make the crucial connections between STEAM concepts and the everyday practice and process of cooking and eating.
Providing opportunities to our students to apply their knowledge in a variety of contexts will serve to deepen their understandings, and also assist in the increased contextualizing of their world.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love picture books. I love reading them and, more importantly, I love reading them aloud to our kids. My read alouds are usually guided by our units of study but, I admit, sometimes I find a picture book that I just need to share - right now! Our collection of picture books is rich and diverse and research has shown, time and time again, how picture books benefit students of all ages!
Here are a few articles that might interest/inspire you and please come check out our amazing collection in the library!
