~from your yearbook team (Paul and Vlad)
As the year is now fully underway, we ask that you gather images you have captured to document the authentic learning journey of students in your classroom. In total, you will have 20 images in the yearbook-- 10 representing the first half of the school year and 10 representing the second half of the school year. Please submit your first 10 images before Friday, December 6. The second installment of 10 photos is due before Friday, April 3. If you have any questions regarding photos, please do not hesitate to ask Paul or Vlad.
Thank you, in advance, for meeting the deadline so that we can ensure a high quality yearbook representative of all members of our school community.
~from the DTL
Now that the school year is in full swing, many of us are dedicating time to student reflection through Seesaw. During the next week, please review our Learning Journey Agreements with your team and take time to share how it is going. One idea might be to share a few recent posts made by your students and evaluate which level they fall within on our continuum. Support one another in reaching our agreement to post regularly (1 to 2 times per week for Core and 2-3 times per unit for Encore) by sharing how you create time and which prompts you are finding most useful and authentic. We will meet together as an ES faculty on Tuesday, Nov. 19 to continue to share and analyze reflective posts as we move toward prioritizing reflection for learning in our classrooms.
~from the Integration Lead and the DTL
Our next Tuesday conversation on Nov. 5 is focused on core/encore integration - see Planning for Learning schedule. These conversations provide us with the opportunity to touch base with our colleagues, find out what is happening in one another's (curricular) worlds, and possibly to develop a fabulous interdisciplinary idea together. It may also be useful to review some of the resources shared by Melissa Daniels to support interdisciplinary learning during this conversation. See here:

~from The New York Times (Oct. 22, 2019)
“Worldwide, desalination is increasingly seen as one possible answer to problems of water quantity and quality that will worsen with global population growth and the extreme heat and prolonged drought linked to climate change...
[Yet,] there are environmental costs to desalination as well: in the emissions of greenhouse gases from the large amount of energy used, and in the disposal of the brine, which in addition to being extremely salty is laced with toxic treatment chemicals.” Click on the following link to learn more: The Cost of Making Water.
*You can access the school's subscription to the NY Times by following these directions:
1. Visit AccessNYT.com
2. Find your school in the search box:
4. After 364 days, as a user you will need to (again) reactivate your pass using steps 1-3 above.
What are you learning about? What is your team learning about? How are your students growing as a result? Each week one of our teams will share their story or learning with the rest of us. Learning experience may be about a book you/your team read, a TedTalk, a conference attended, an online course, PIC progress, or reflections on a recent learning experience students engaged in. As part of our Culture of Learning, it is important we share our stories of growth and learning with one another. Reflections can take any form you choose (i.e., video, written, image, Sketchnote, etc). Talk to your team lead to find out more and learn when your team will be sharing their story of learning with others.
Grade Five Looks at Matter
Our students have been investigating matter and all its properties. Through the lens of being a scientist they hypothesized and tested their theories. They collaborated in numerous hands-on investigations of phenomena demonstrating states of matter including matter changing states between solid, liquid and gas. They concluded that matter is made of particles too small to be seen. These experiences enabled our students to demonstrate proficiency in developing and using models, planning and carrying out investigations, and communicating their understanding of the core ideas.

~from the Innovation Team (Nate, Paul, and Vlad) Google Earth is a computer program that renders a 3D representation of Earth based primarily on satellite imagery. The program maps the Earth by superimposing satellite images, aerial photography, and GIS data onto a 3D globe, allowing users to see cities and landscapes from various angles. There are two options to use Google Earth (both are free). You can: |

~from the ES Librarian
I hope everyone had a restful and relaxing October break although with the craziness of Halloween week, it feels like forever ago! Don’t fret - winter break is only 6 weeks away.
We had a very successful Usborne book fair this year (thank you AISB families) with the Library receiving over £1400 of free books. This year I would like to do something different with the free books. I would like to offer them to all of you to enhance your grade level libraries.
I will have the books out on display in the Library on our PD day, Monday November 4. Please drop by with your teammates to browse , choose books for the grade level, and provide our new reads with a home where they will be lovingly read and shared. My Library Club will be labeling them and stamping them so all you need to do is come and take a look. Happy long weekend, friends.
